Day 1

The Woman Question is designed to be a place where the ideas, issues, and experiences surrounding many women in the wold today can be discussed. Daily I hear stories and encounter situations in which I realize that our culture still seems to have an unfair hierarchy privileging men over women. Why is this so? Perhaps through working out the complicated history and cultural contexts we might begin to see why these trends are prevalent--because they exist everywhere from the home, to school, in the workplace, and even among women themselves. Through daily entries it will be my objective to point out these issues (as well as solutions) in my life, and the lives of those around me.

Whitney said...: A few years ago I was dating a guy with some outdated ideas about the roles of women and men. He thought that there should be one vote per family and that the family's vote should be cast by the man. When I questioned his idea, he became quite defensive and told me that in an ideal world wives would agree with their husbands. Evolution of Marxism

I was once told that the entire system of capitalism is based on the back of women's unpaid labor. Throughout my studies this idea has become increasingly more plausible. It is interesting to note the "feminization" or "housewifization" of the workforce. Consider what it means to be a mother. You never get a break; you are always the invisible and dependable help. Your work is very effective (because it has to be), and you work odd hours. You are never "off-call." The best employees in this capitalist system act very much like "mothers" in this respect. Consider the inexhaustible worker, the invisible worker, the dependable worker, the worker that doesn't take time off--perhaps some truth lies in the idea of the womanization of the proletariat. Congratulations capitalism! You've made the perfect employee...

Power Girl: Gender Constructions and Video Games

Perhaps video games have been criticized for their violence, but not often enough have they been criticized for their sex constructions of both body image of men and women. Obviously in a world where imagination is the ideal, some things can be embellished—but this woman’s breasts cannot be considered within the limits of any type of “reality”…even virtual. Men’s bodies are objectified as well—made into muscular killing machines. Of course many video games have good qualities and develop skills needed, but the images are what bother me. Images which are hard to erase, especially in the virtual sense.

Women: the "little" adults

If men are seen as aggressive, direct, and rational--stereotypical "feminine" qualities include submissive, meek, emotional, and simple--in short--child like. Are women truly treated like adults when these kinds of stereotypes still permeate our societal constructions of gender? And then again…is there anything more threatening than an aggressive, direct, and rational woman? In what ways is the marginalization of women and characterization as “childlike” relegate them to a place of “safety,” and therefore a place that is not threatening to “masculinity?”
